Organica is closing + sale!

As it says, we’ll be closing for renovations!

From now until August 5, a coupon will be available at the landing point for all visitors to use towards 25% off all items (excluding RFL)! Simply buy a copy, then wear the coupon (it will attach as a HUD) and click on the vendor you want to purchase from. A menu item will appear; select ‘Use Card’ – this will activate your discount for 60 seconds. You can then pay the vendor at the reduced amount.

At 9PM SLT August 5, Organica will close and all visitors will be rerouted to a temporary telehub while the sim is redone.

While no specific maintenance will be done to the Marketplace stock during this time, a significant portion of older stock will be retired from the shop floor to make room for newer and better content.

On August 12, 2012, join us for a live music event! (More details to be announced)

Visit Organica and get your last minute photos of the sim before everything’s levelled next week!

Natural Hare animation overrider

While I’ve noted the Hare avatars can be used as is across many Animation Overrides, I’ve also been working on an AO which creates some poses a real hare might use. So that’s what is being put out today! The AO includes 10 basic animations which will be great to start you off on your hare-y existence!

The HUD includes:

– 10 animations which include stands, sits, a walk, prejump and jump

– Hare avatar eye control (also works with Tusk and Owl avatar eyes in theory), negating need to use two HUDs for eye control and AO.

– 3 quick animation buttons at top level menu for sit, eat and lie down.

Buy the full AO (with HUD) for lifetime updates (including any new animations bundled with the HUD!) or separately if you feel comfortable adding individual animations to an existing AO HUD (separate animations are not eligible for updates).

Check it out at Wilds of Organica!

New avatars available!

New to the line of Wilds of Organica avatars:

Yup – two hares are now available!

This avatar is designed to mostly work well with normal human animation overrides, although if you would like more animalistic animations, I highly recommend ORACUL for this avatar. I’ve included some notes and landmarks for various animation shops with the avatar, so that should get you started.

Each avatar is about 0.75m in height (standing on hind legs) and comes with eye control, customizable eyes and whisker attachments. All object components are mod/copy, while scripted components are copy only.

New Coleus plants + Rock walls now available

Brighten up your garden with these brilliant coleus plants!  Each one is 3LI with or without the pot, and sports vibrant hand-drawn foliage with realistic lighting and detailing. Ten varieties are available either individually or as a fatpack. Mod/copy/no transfer. Requires mesh capable viewer. ( Buy in Store ) ( Buy on Marketplace )

These rock walls have been requested somewhat regularly since i first started using them at Home Expo. While I wasn’t ready to offer them then, I’ve finished up the things I wanted to do with them and now make them available for you.

To use: Simply rez and move up against areas where you’d like a rock wall. Do note: these items do not have backsides in order to cut down on LI and reduce viewer resource use. To give these items a backside, consider duplicating and facing the other way, using other prims or backing these items up against terrain.

Available mod/copy/no transfer. Requires mesh capable viewer. ( Buy in store ) ( Buy on Marketplace )

ACS Relay for Life Home & Garden Expo 2012 + housekeeping + land news

Organica returns to Home and Garden Expo this weekend thru ’till May 28 with some new releases as well as some Relay for Life exclusives!

Drop by my display at Dreamseeker Home Expo8!

April showers last month brought May Flowers this month!

Eight varieties of pansies are now available! They are sold seperately in individual pots or all in one big fatpack, which includes both individual pots as well as one big pot that includes all eight varieties. You can also unlink the individual plants from pots if you’d like to use one or the other separately. ( Buy in Store )( Marketplace link to follow )

As part of fundraising for the American Cancer Society, this set of four purple pansies (also known as violets!) is offered as a single pack; they are individually potted but also come with a larger pot which includes all four varieties. You can also unlink the individual plants from pots if you’d like to use one or the other separately. As a mesh item, this does require a mesh compatible viewer.  ( Buy in Store )( Marketplace link to follow)

These purple anemones are the first of a series of anemones which will be released soon and this variety is available only as an RFL item! The full potted plant is 24LI, but can be broken down to 2LI individual flowers. As a mesh item, this does require a mesh compatible viewer. Pick these up at Home Expo or in-store!

This open concept reading house has a 16x20m footprint featuring expansive window roofing and fabric shade. Textures also feature tasteful baked shadows suitable for a structure of this kind. The structure is unfurnished and is 29 LI as packaged. As a mesh item, this does require a mesh compatible viewer. Offered as an RFL item for the duration of RFL this year, available at Home and Garden Expo as well as in-store. Mod, copy, no transfer.

A bit of housekeeping; this item was released during March Mesh Madness but never made it as a post to this blog, so I’m rectifying that now. This frame set features three detailed Japanese maple leaves, carefully mounted for presentation. They’re excellent accent pieces to almost any interior and are great as gifts. They are mesh, so they do require a mesh compatible viewer. Available at Home and Garden Expo as well as in-store. They are mod/copy/no transfer, however they can be gifted in-store; just click the vendor prior to purchase for gifting options.

Land:

Land is still available in Sylvan and for the month of May, successful referrals will gain existing Residents two free weeks of tier on any parcel which they currently occupy. Come by the land office , explore the sim and have a look to see what Sylvan has to offer! If you’ve been here a long time ago, consider dropping by again, as I am continually improving upon unused spaces to create a more immersive atmosphere. Feel free to also make use of the sandbox, which while small, features a 3hr auto-return, a beautiful environment, many board games and media stream control for group members.

April Showers…

It’s April!

And yeah, i haven’t been able to post much about new developments for a while. Various work related things have been keeping me occupied one way or another, so I’ve been rather quiet lately.

I have added a new SUYS item to Organica’s offerings; this time in keeping with its ‘April Showers’ theme, you can find a great deal on some new mesh pathways which feature a mesh base, detachable water reflections, plus low prim raindrop objects – all of which serve to make the new ‘Rainy Day Walk’ pathway pieces more ‘April Shower’-ish! This item is mod/copy (internal scripts copy only) and available at an introductory price of $150L, in store only, this weekend only!

Next month things are bound to get pretty busy, but i really hope I have a chance to complete a new prefab i’ve been working on and to release a plethora of new things in time for Home and Garden Expo, which I’ll be taking part in this year! More details to follow in the next few weeks.

MMM Details & some product updates

March Mesh Madness 2012 begins tomorrow!

I’ve finally had a chance to finish up my booth and look forward to exhibiting my work!

Some new items have been released, along with a MMM12 exclusive, a freebie and some discounts too!

Details are as follows:

These trendy star-shaped lamps come in eight colours, all in one set. Click to toggle through on, off or natural daylight. 1 LI each as packaged, mod/copy/no transfer. ( Buy at MMM12 )

Exclusive to March Mesh Madness, these white-veined blue crocus flowers are offered as part of a potted setting but also include all three crocus flower shapes inside. This colour will only ever be offered at MMM12, so if you like it, this will be your only chance to pick it up. 1 LI per flower, total setting comes to 9 LI. mod/copy/no transfer. Available only at MMM12!

Don’t forget to snag this freebie from the display as well 🙂

Some items have been marked 33% off, again at MMM12 only.

With the exception of the MMM12 Crocus, all items released above will be available in-store at Organica or on Marketplace about a week from now. In the mean time, help make the March Mesh Madness event a success by dropping by, bringing your friends, or just in general passing the word around about the show.

Wilds of Organica Updates:

Updates have been sent for both the Burrowing Owl and Snowy Owl avatars, fixing the top level sit button, preventing the av from getting pushed underground when the ‘birdsit’ button is pressed. The eyelid texture for the snowy owls has also been fixed and should appear black, not brown. If you did not recieve the update, please let me know and I’ll look in to redelivery.

MMM12 & February SUYS

February has (outwardly) been a little slow for releases – I took the early part of the month putting together an updated build that would hold more items, then I got accepted as a merchant for March Mesh Madness 2012, which begins March 1st, so I’ve also been running around like a headless chicken trying to get my stuff done for it too, on top of other work and a RL move out to the boonies.

So please visit my booth and explore at March Mesh Madness, beginning March 1! There will be some exclusive releases, some debuts, some freebies. I’ll post more about this as the time draws closer 🙂

In other news, Organica’s participating in SUYS this weekend and from today ’till Monday morning, you’ll be able to snag the following item for a discounted price!

This month’s Spruce Up Your Space theme is ‘Bad Romance’. Come give this seat a try and make sure you bring a friend. It comes with five couples animations in all; three cuddles and two disagreements. Offered mod/copy/no transfer. ( Buy in store )

Sculpt & Mesh: Then & Now

Folks who have been following my blog postings for a while will probably note that I’ve been releasing mostly mesh items for the past few months.  I still enjoy making sculpts now and then and the majority of my inventory is still sculpt, but there are just so many advantages that meshes have over sculpt that the additional hit primwise is usually far more worth it (and sometimes one can manage to be less primmy than if one were to use sculpts too!).

I recently dug up this old post of mine back from 2008, decrying the constant use of sculpts in clothing etc. It’s sort of funny because I can see areas where my position was hypocritical, yet at the same time it was true that the abusive overusage of sculpts (which eventually became the norm) was contributing considerably to viewer lag.

A few things remain problems, between 2008 and now:

[box type=”shadow”]

Sculpts are limited in their stitching type:

Sculpts are proprietary hacks that are severely limited by a set number of stitching types (shapes) that can be manipulated. UV layouts are always rectangular and always fit these stitching types completely in a similarly rectangular fashion. As a result, not counting some XML hackery*, someone looking to texture such an object will always be limited to only one rectangular texture that will always be applied in full to the object.

Restricting sculpts to a set number of stitching types also creates problems as far as distortion – bunching up at the poles of sculpts in particular comes to mind. Additionally, because sculpts are always limited to a specific UV layout, stretching things out too far between one or two set of verts could mean ugly texturing later.

Each sculpt represents 2048 triangles. No more, no less.
Sculpts are assigned only one prim per 2048 triangles. On the surface, this was a blessing because people felt they could be far less primmy while gaining more realistic looking objects, even if in a limited fashion. Prim hair that would be otherwise impossible given limits on the size of linksets was suddenly eminently possible. But let’s also remember that sculpts represent a minimum of 1024 quads/2048 triangles per prim, and due to the problems outlined above, in most cases it is not possible to make as good use of a sculptie as one can with a mesh with the same number of faces. Many game companies strive to keep full characters down to between 4000-6000 polygons total, yet some content creators now broach the maximum number of items within a linkset with each prim a sculpt (that’s 524288 polygons)! And that’s just one attachment! If it’s a boot, you’ll need to wear a matching set (doubling your polycount) and of course if you want to wear anything else, that will be more costly resource-wise as well. **

* Of note: there is a hack out there utilized by some content creators which gives some limited flexibility as far as adding an additional texture face to a single sculpt, however the fact remains that sculpts are mainly proprietary to Second Life and when used in other environments would most certainly be considered inflexible, wasteful and inefficient.

** For extra fun, let’s also not forget people using V2/3 can now add up to 38 attachments per attachment point now and there are a total of 30 attachment points on the avatar already. So for those keeping count, that’s a maximum 524,288 polygons per attachment, max 19,922,944 polys per attachment point, max 597,688,320 polys per avatar! It’s highly likely your viewer would crash long before you managed this, however it is important to note just how abusive this can get, especially in situations where everyone wants to look their best in front of a crowd.  This can be combatted by turning on avatar imposters and there is talk about adding visual muting functionality, but this does not remove from the fact that your viewer still needs to download this information before muting it.

[/box]

Of course, I realize my development of sculptie products over many years has in itself contributed to this problem, but I would have to say that is a big part of why many of the items I make now are mesh rather than sculpt. While I have always tried to keep prim counts down and use as much of a single sculpt as possible, ultimately sculpts (even in low quantities) present artificial challenges that are far more easily dealt with when modelling mesh.

I have noticed that some newcomers to mesh have elected to simply attempt upload of unoptimized sculpt assets as mesh (since that’s what sculpts are) and I have a bit of ranting I could do on that, but it’s best kept for another post. Ultimately, mesh represents a great opportunity for creators to both create more responsibly and make it look better at the same time; it is my hope that the content creator community does not squander it.

This past Monday, it was announced that 70% of active users are now using mesh-capable viewers, with about 28% of regions in SL containing at least some mesh content. Considering it was released to the public on the Main Grid back in August, this seems like a pretty healthy rate of adoption and given this format is much more of an industry standard, it makes me optimistic for content creation to come.
